Aconcagua Expedition

Off to Argentina and Chile and Patagonia before our later season expedition to Aconcagua. Looking forward to this as Aconcagua is always a fun mountain to climb. Always hard, always windy, always a challenge! I am in Patagonia right now, and plan to be in Mendoza on the 13th to get ready for this trip. Upper Vacas Route
February 18, 2003 Plaza Fondo
Scott's group is at the Plaza Fondo basecamp on the north side of Aconcagua. They carried loads up to Camp 1 today, returning to basecamp to sleep, and will move up tomorrow. They observed a few penitentes just below Camp 1, but otherwise the trail has been snow free so far. Scott reports, that the weather has been stellar...quite hot on the trek into basecamp. This should have provided Chris and John's team a good shot at the summit this weekend. They are leading a group that departed on Feb. 1st.
Next report should find the team at Camp 2...

All is well with Scott and team. Just got a quick message from him via satellite phone. They are exploring a new variation on the Upper Vacas route between camps 1 and 3. "Looks pretty cool and may offer a new alternative for future trips!", he says. More details later...
