Highlights of Trekking in Greenland

Trek into the remote areas of East Greenland.

Kulusak: Our initial destination in Greenland is actually a relatively large airport on an Island off the coast. With recent air connections from Keflavik Iceland, this area has become more accessible by air. From Kulusuk we make connections to the small town of Ammassalik in Bell 212 helicopters.

Ammassalik: This village is also known as Tasiilaq. We’ll be staying in the very nice Hotel Ammassalik, a relaxing lodge overlooking town, with time to explore town. We plan a short hike in the hills around town the following day. Interesting in being mostly Inuit, almost every house has a dog team out front and seal and fish drying on racks out back. Only a couple thousand people live in this whole area! This is basically where our trip starts and ends, a great place for relaxing before and after the trek! This will be our base for our trips into the remote mainland area!

Ammassalik region: We’ll explore the hills behind town, scrambling up Qaqqartivagajik Mountain (a few hours) then back to the lodge for the night. After our trek we can see the Valley of Flowers near Ammassalik, again a few hours from town.

Charter Boat from Angmagssalik to Tasilaq Fiord: Off to the start of our trek via the Ammassalik Fiord, then along the Tasiilaq Fiord to our drop off point. We pass the very small community of Kuummiit along the way. This is really one of the last settlements going north for hundreds of miles up the east coast of Greenland. We use small charter boats, timing the tides with the ice pack to allow clear leads for navigation. It is possible to travel by helicopter and is an option for all trips to Greenland. Helicopters are very expensive though and the charter rates would be in addition to our land cost prices.

Tasilaq Fiord to Ningerti Trek: Starting out from our drop off point we follow a wonderful valley to up to a new hut along the icecap. A difficult scramble up to the hut is worth the view. A fantastic vista of the start of the huge Greenland icecap! A night here is magic! From the hut we descend and follow a valley across to the Ningerti Straight.  Then along the huge Sermilik Fiord. This trek takes us through some of Greenland’s most spectacular fiord country. Camping along the ice filled fiords and the lush green valleys. This initial section of the trek is the most difficult. Several difficult river fords and lots of up and downs around headlands.

Sermilik to Tiniteqilaaq:This section is easier following the Sermilik Fiord then inland for a ways down to Tiniteqilaaq and our boat to back to Ammassalik.

Ammassalik: Back to Ammassalik for a night before connections back to Kulusuk and Keflavik, Iceland. A spectacular trek into Greenland!

Please note: If the new hotel is built in Kulusuk, we will depart for the trek direct from there in boats. It’s a shorter boat ride and will save everyone the extra helicopter connection to Ammassalik.
