Highlights of Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari
Climb Africa's highest mountain, then visit Tanzania’s best game reserves.

Arusha:  Our base for trips into the outback! This is where our trip starts and ends, a great place for relaxing before and after Kilimanjaro or the Safari. It is possible to travel through Nairobi to get to Arusha, although we do not recommend this. Plan to fly directly into Kilimanjaro airport if at all possible.

Machame or Shira Routes:  By far the best routes on Kilimanjaro. Offering a more gradual ascent, combined with a very lush forest make this side the best, non-technical route to the summit. We actually see a lot more of the mountain by going up this side, then down via the normal route, seven days round trip. Either route takes us past the beautiful Shira Plateau, full of some of the most interesting flora anywhere!

Kilimanjaro's Crater:  On the way to the summit we hike right along the crater rim with spectacular views of the glaciers both inside the crater and down the Machame/Shira side. This is really one of the best parts of the trip; it is a lot of work at this altitude but worth it! We actually summit via the Mweka finish to Stella Point. We also have the option to climb the Arrow Glacier finish, shorter but steeper.

Descent via the Mweka Route:  From the summit we continue down the Mweka route past the Barafu hut down to the Mweka huts on the edge of the forest. A good route for descending. A long hike gets us down to the Mweka huts for the night, then back to Arusha the next day after a beautiful hike through the forest to Mweka Gate. We can alternatively descend the Marangu route to Marangu Gate.

Arusha National Park:  After a well deserved rest in Arusha we head off in a Land Rover to explore the nearby Arusha National Park. A great sample of the local wildlife. (We sometimes do this on our way up to the start of the Kilimanjaro climb).

Safari:  Following Arusha National Park, we are off for a fantastic Safari into Tarangiri, Lake Manyara, Nogorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Parks. This is really the adventure of a lifetime, not to be missed. You will see all the animals Africa is known for. There may be some additional people joining us for the Safari section. We use a local wildlife guide, reliable Land Rovers, and spend 3 nights camping and the rest in very nice Wildlife lodges.

Included:  Airport transfers (Kilimanjaro Airport), ground transportation, hotels in Arusha, agency costs, American guide (both safari and climb), safari guide and driver, very experienced local mt. guide, asst. guide, porters, all meals while on safari and climbing, all permits, park fees, hut fees, and camping fees.

Length:  7 day climb, 7 days on Safari. 14 days/ 13 nights total for the climb and safari.

Difficulty:  Difficult hiking at high altitude, but without packs. Hot, dusty traveling, mostly all rough dirt roads, on the safari. (Can be extremely muddy during the wet season.)

Experience Level:  No climbing experience required, good physical condition, previous altitude experience helpful.
