Highlights of Explore Morocco Join us for a summit climb of Jebal Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Mts. plus a camel trek into the Sahara. Casablanca: Meet in Casablanca at the Hotel de Noailles downtown, with time to explore the center of town and a bit of the Medina, a very busy market area. If everyone arrives early, we can drive south to Marrakech, Marrakech is a bit more interesting than Casablanca. Marrakech: Load up our jeep for the drive south. It's about 4 hours on down to Marrakech. A bit longer and more scenic route, 8 hours, would be through the middle Atlas Mountains and past the waterfalls "Cascades d'Ouzoud, then onto Marrakech. We stay in Marrakech for two nights. Very exotic market areas line the streets of Marrakech, anything you can imagine can be bought in the narrow, winding streets. Mt. Jebal Toubkal: Start into the Toubkal (Neltner) hut and spend the night at the base of Mt. Jebal Toubkal. We may hire a local guide for the trek in and climb, depending on conditions. For mid season climbs its easier rock scrambling, for winter climbs, we will need snow gear to climb. Summit day on Toubkal: Starting early we'll go for the summit, 13,744 ft. high mountain, the highest in the Atlas Mountains. We plan to do the standard route from the Neltner hut. Summit day is fairly long with over 3000 ft. of elevation up and down. During the winter, weather and climbing conditions can be challenging. Draa Valley: Get ready for a day checking out the impressive Draa Valley, south of Quarzazate. Possibility of hiking up towards Jebal Zagora, a peak near Zagora. This Valley is lined with ancient Kasbahs, and offers spectacular views all the way. Depending on how far we'd like to travel, we can continue onto Zagora. Zagora and the Sahara: We continue south to Zagora, a fascinating city on the edge of the great dunes of the Sahara. We plan at least an overnight camel trek into the area by M’Hamid to see and experience the Sahara. Riding camels can be quite an experience. Sunset and sunrise in the dunes is an unforgettable event! Dades valley: Off to see the Dades Valley and Todra Gorges, also known as "the Valley of 1000 Kasbahs"! We spend a couple days exploring this arid, lunar region. The Todra Gorge is one of Morocco's most amazing natural wonders, a slot canyon 1000 ft. deep and 30 ft. wide! A wild craggy, barren landscape, mixed with green oases and palmeraies. We can spend the night in Er-Rachida, on our way back north. This is truly the edge of the Sahara, which stretches on into Algeria to the East from here! Ziz Gorge: Through the spectacular Ziz Gorge to the North of Er-Rachida, on our way starting back to Casablanca. It will take a couple days seeing Azrou, then Meknes on our way back. We continue through the beach town of Rabat and arrive back in Casablanca the day before our flights depart.
