Great Trango Tower Expedition Highlights Islamabad/ Rawlpindi: We begin this trip in the hot, humid city of Islamabad. A very interesting culture of predominantly Muslim people. We'll spend 1 to 2 days exploring the markets and bazaars here before flying to Skardu. Skardu: We’ll fly to Skardu (note: sometimes there are problems with the flights to Skardu, and we have to go via the Karakoram hwy.) When in Skardu we stay in the classic K2 Hotel. We'll organize jeeps here for the long drive on into Dasso and Askole. Askole: The end of the road. This is where we'll hire porters for the trek into base camp. Askole is a small irrigated and cultivated oasis on the way into the Baltoro Gl., at the base of the Braldu River Gorge. Braldu Valley: From Askole we hike up the remote Braldu Valley and Gorge. Quite a desolate place; it is usually very hot, no trees, some very interesting river crossings, and spectacular views of the Karakoram Mountains. Approximately 7 days hike in from Askole to Base Camp. Baltoro Glacier: After 5 days of hiking we reach the massive Baltoro Glacier, 2 more days up and down the huge lower glacier moraines of this glacier we reach the Dunge Glacier feeding the Baltoro Glacier. We may spend 6 more days hiking on up and back to Concordia with a trekking group that may be with us for acclimatization. A fascinating look at K2, the Gasherbrums, Broad Peak, Muztagh Tower, and lots more! Dunge Glacier: This small side glacier feeding the larger lower Baltoro Glacier will be home for our base camp over the next couple weeks. We’ll acclimatize for a few days at base camp before starting up on the climb. A very beautiful camp right at the base of huge granite slabs rising thousands of feet above a small lake with absolutely amazing views of the Trangos, Uli Biaho, Masherbrum and lots of other peaks. The North Face route: First up a long 2,000 ft. approach gully leading to the Col between Nameless and Great Trango Towers where we’ll set up our first camp, then up through a series of rock steps to the glacier, for our second camp. From here we push to the summit or maybe another camp only 700 Ft. below the summit. All depends on conditions and group strength. Easier climbing on steeper snow and ice is the crux, then a step traverse along the amazing summit ridge (see photo on front of this flyer). Trek Out: Following the climb we'll head back out, reversing the approach route back to Askole, Skardu, then flying back to Islamabad. We will have some time to check in Islamabad before flights back home. Included: All permits, hotels, airport transfers, ground transportation, liaison officer expenses and equipment, peak fees, porters, food while trekking and on the mountain, group camping and climbing gear, local sirdar/guide and American guides. Not Included: Airfare to/from U.S., to/from Skardu, all restaurant food, personal equipment, gifts, visa and departure taxes. Length: 28 days, trek only is 18 days. Dates: Custom departures, July is best. Difficulty: Moderately technical snow and ice climbing, rock climbing to 5.8. Experience Level: Solid climbing background, altitude experience very helpful. Altitude: 20,600 Ft. Trip Price: Please see schedule for current prices and departure dates. |
