Machu Picchu, Inca Trail and the Amazon
The best of Peru! This is a fascinating trip into the cultural heart of the Incas and a look into the Peruvian Amazon region. Our trip starts and ends in Cuzco. We spend a few days hiking the Inca Trail, exploring Machu Picchu and the surrounding areas. Machu Picchu is the center of the ancient Inca Empire, a huge lost city sitting in the middle of the jungle. We follow a number of local trekking routes in the hills, allowing plenty of time to see and explore the ruins and markets. We will also visit the Amazon jungle near the town of Puerto Maldonado. This provides quite a contrast to the higher altitude regions of Machu Picchu and Cuzco. Lots of animals and bird life along the Rio Tambopata.
